What is the best (free if possible) text-to-voice PDF reader for research papers and other academic writing?

Writable Pdf . It’s possible to write your whole research paper with a chisel on a giant slab of stone, if that’s what you really want to do. But I think this might be a poor choice. It would slow you down a bit, limit the formatting options (where do the footnotes go?), and would make editing more difficult if you don’t get everything exactly right the first time around, or if your committee wants revisions. On the plus side, the result would automatically be “archival”, probably lasting even longer than your university library. On the minus side, distributing copies to your committee members every month or so could be awkward. OK, in case this was a serious question. If by “mobile device” you mean a decent-quality laptop, sure, lots of people use those now. (I assume that we’re talking here only about producing the document, not about any computing you might have to do as part of the research.) If you mean a tablet with a keyboard, probably OK. Some of the best recent tablets are almost laptop equivalents, and just as good as a real computer for poking around the web to gather information and check things as you write. Seeing what a page looks like and fiddling with formatting might be awkward, however. If you mean a smartphone — personally, I think I’d prefer the rock slab and chisel. But then, I’m still not very adept at thumb-typing or reading/formatting complex documents on a tiny screen. If living only on a phone works for you and doesn’t slow you down too much, then I guess there’s no reason not to do this. But do be careful to back up your manuscript in the cloud somewhere — phones easily get lost, stolen, broken, soaked, or eaten. And, no, I’ve never heard of anyone actually doing their thesis or a serious technical paper on a smartphone or tablet.
